Hundreds of budding journalists from across the country shared the limelight with industry veterans at the 16th annual National Student Media Awards at Dublin's Aviva Stadium last night.
RTE's Teresa Mannion, Dave Fanning and Marty Morrissey were among some of the seasoned professionals who attended the gala ceremony.
The student press corps at University College Cork (UCC) were the big winners, taking home eight awards, including Editor of the Year for Ellen Desmond.
Her work, according to Irish Independent Editor Fionnan Sheahan, who judged the category, "would not be out of place in a professional publication," due to the quality of her design and content.
The college also scooped Magazine of the Year, Colour Writer of the Year, Short Story of the Year, Blog of the Year, the European Commission award and Features Writer of the Year in both the Arts and Pop Culture categories and News and Current Affairs.
DIT came in second, winning five awards, followed by UCD, which scooped two gongs.
INM reporter Wayne O'Connor was named National Press Journalist of the Year as a UL student for his work with the Irish Independent, covering news, current affairs and politics.
