RTE'S News bulletins are to have a new signature tune from Irish composer Ronan Hardiman as part of a radical re-vamp of the newsroom.

The broadcaster confirmed they had commissioned the theme tune as part of an updated news programme, which will be unveiled before the end of the year.

"We are currently in the process of refreshing the newsroom," an RTE spokesperson said. "It's been five years since the newsroom was last updated. We have to compete with global newsrooms and need to provide a world-class service.

"The bulletins, studio and music will all change – these are subtle but substantial changes that will keep the newsroom contemporary and cutting edge."

Hardiman is a prolific composer having created the musical scores behind several of Michael Flatley's stage shows including 'Lord of the Dance', 'Feet of Flames' and 'Celtic Tiger'.

He also worked on IFTA winning documentary series 'Waterways'.
