Mr McPartlin worked in the Irish advertising and media business before taking up the position and was also the CEO of Dublin music station, TXFM.

He said he did not make the decision to leave “lightly”, but wanted to pursue new opportunities.

“I have been hugely committed to the success of Today FM over the course of my time here, as well as putting the future of TXFM, on a sound footing, so this is not a decision that I made lightly,” he said.

“I think there has rarely been a more exciting time to be working in media, music and technology, especially as these three worlds collide.

“I now want to devote time to explore new opportunities, both from a personal and career point of view, while I have the freedom to do so,” he added.

Speaking about his departure, Gervaise Slowey, Group CEO of Communicorp, said McPartlin had worked hard to bring in a host of new presenters. “Peter has overseen many important changes to the station including bringing in exceptional new talent to Today FM in the form of Anton Savage, Dermot and Dave, Louise Duffy, Paula MacSweeney, Kelly-Anne Byrne, Fergal D’Arcy and Neil Delamere,” she said.

“In addition Peter has grown our digital audiences and has been instrumental in the launch of Communicorp One, our joint sales team with Newstalk.

“Peter leaves behind a strong team well positioned for growth and to bring both Today FM and TXFM to the next stage,” she added.

Today FM has an audience of over 900,000 each week and is Ireland’s largest commercial radio station. TXFM has an audience of 40,000 per week.
