National commercial radio broadcaster Newstalk has named Tim Collins as its incoming chief executive.

He is due to take up the post in the New Year, on January 4.

A qualified doctor and barrister, Mr Collins worked at RTE in the late 80’s before becoming a political advisor, and later Head of Public Affairs and Project Management at public relations firm Drury Communications.

Former Newstalk chief executive Gerard Whelan stepped down earlier this year to pursue other interests.

The appointment of the current chief of Ocean FM to the top spot at a Communicorp owned Newstalk is subject to regulatory sign off. As well as being a founding executive at Ocean FM, Mr Collins has been a long standing Director of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland.

Commenting on the appointment, Gervaise Slowey, Chief Executive of Communicorp Group said,  “We are delighted that Tim is joining Newstalk at such a significant time for our business. Tim brings his considerable experience in media, broadcasting and politics to the role, which will be invaluable as our  station continues to grow its audience. He has lead Ocean FM with great skill for the last ten years and his business experience and drive will be of great benefit to Newstalk”.
