INDEPENDENT News & Media has named experienced retailer Robert Pitt as the publisher’s next chief executive.

The owner of this website and the Irish Independent newspaper said the Irishman will take up the position in the autumn.

“The board is delighted to announce the appointment,” said INM chairman Leslie Buckley  “The news publishing sector faces many challenges and Robert Pitt, whose extensive experience includes change-management and digital strategy, is well equipped to lead INM into the future.”

The father-of-four has carved out a career in Tesco's Eastern European operations in recent years. He has also worked in China and as a tax advisor for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The University College Dublin economics graduate is currently chief operations officer of Tesco in the Czech Republic and also held senior management positions for Lidl in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland.

His selection was the result of a “thorough recruitment process undertaken by the nominations sub-committee of the board in conjunction with an independent recruitment firm,” INM said this morning.

He replaces Vincent Crowley who stepped down in May.
