INM appoints Stephen Rae as Editor in Chief of titles
INDEPENDENT News & Media has appointed Stephen Rae as editor in Chief of the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and The Herald.
The new role is designed to ensure that the titles in print, online and mobile are "platform agnostic" and collaborative while preserving their unique ethos and tone of voice, the company said today.
The Editor in Chief will report to the group chief executive and will also ensure that the titles are structured, resourced and aligned for an increasingly digital future, it added..
Mr Rae was appointed editor of the Irish Independent in September 2012 – he is a former editor of the Evening Herald as well as deputy editor and security correspondent at that title.
An announcement regarding his replacement as editor of the Irish Independent will be made in due course, INM said.
Mr Rae (46) is a native of Co Kerry, a graduate of the DIT School of Journalism as well as a qualified barrister.
Commenting on his appointment, Vincent Crowley, chief executive of INM said: "Stephen’s performance as editor of the Irish Independent and the Evening Herald and his vision for an integrated, digitally adept and platform agnostic newsroom, has made him the standout candidate for this critically important role.
“A key challenge for Stephen and our exceptional team of editors and journalists is to make our market leading content and great writers more accessible to consumers in a manner and at a price that sustains consumer engagement and the integrity and quality of our reportage.”
Mr Rae added today: “All media organisations need to change and adapt if they are to grow and prosper. I see my role as driving a collaborative change process impacting how we source, package and present content for the benefit of our consumers and advertisers.
“That journey is already well underway in our newsrooms where our editorial staff has shown great flexibility and support in seeking to reposition the titles for a digital future.”
Mr Rae’s appointment follows an international executive search process undertaken by MERC Partners.
