THE Independent.ie website is now the largest online news publishing site in Ireland, according to new research.

The newspaper category of the latest comScore Media Metrix shows Independent.ie is now bigger than its nearest rivals.

This follows a long period of very strong development and double digit Irish Traffic growth across Independent.ie since August ’11.

This growth is said to reflect the adoption of a number of initiatives to drive user engagement across the site.

The site, under new online editor Noirin Hegarty, relaunched its commenting facility early last year. It hosts and manages regular live blogs on sporting and other newsworthy events.

In addition, their social engagement capability has been enriched to enhance sharing functionality, on a range of social media networks.

Independent Digital CEO Ian Byrne said: "We are delighted to work with comScore for 2012, whose metrics and the underlying Unified Digital Measurement methodology demonstrates our position as the number one online newspaper site in Ireland."
