UP to 15 jobs have been axed at British-owned newspapers the 'Irish Daily Mail' and the 'Irish Mail on Sunday'.

Associated Newspapers Ltd, which produces both papers, announced the job cuts yesterday.

It said the staff, who were mainly employed in the production department in Ballsbridge, Dublin, were let go due to the "current economic downturn".

It is believed that the company's head office, based in London, will now oversee the production of the two titles.

There is growing unease about the likelihood that further departments within the newspaper group will be targeted.

There are rumours up to 300 jobs may be cut at the the London headquarters of the 'Daily Mail'.
