Gift company Smartbox has announced 100 new jobs at its Dublin office, where it already employs 400 people.

The group are undertaking a significant R&D project in Dublin, with the focus of this project on creating a state of the art information system in Dublin, Smartbox said.

As a result of this project, the Dublin site will need to enhance its technology team and it is actively recruiting skilled candidates including systems engineers, front and back end developers, BI and Data analysts, salesforce and DevOps engineers.

The group, which last year sold 6.5 million vouchers across Europe, has also added a further 2,000 sq feet of office space to accommodate the new staff.

The news was welcomed by IDA Ireland and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, who described it as “a great success story”.

“I am confident that the company will go from strength to strength and that it will find the required skills from our talented workforce to fill these new positions. I look forward to watching Smartbox progress in its rapidly developing market,” the Minister said.

In 2016 Smartbox accounted for half of the European business volume of experience gifts estimated at €1bn.

Currently the company operates in 10 countries including France, Italy, the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Germany.

Smartbox, which works with 40,000 service providers across Europe and has over 950 employees, said that it expects to create further roles across all other areas of the company in Ireland including customer service, sales, marketing, finance, supply chain and digital, bringing total employee numbers in Ireland to over 500 by the end 2017.

The group has also announced the acquisition of Odisseias (subject to approval from competition regulators), which is the leader in the experience gift category in Portugal, with 75pc market share.

Odisseias employs 50 people and recorded €12 million worth of sales in 2016.
