A safe bet for graduates

Paddy Power Betfair runs one of the most sought after Graduate Programmes in Ireland. With applications now being accepted for September 2017, the team at Paddy Power Betfair reveal just what makes their grad programme a winner.

"So often people end up pigeonholed into certain roles with little scope to try different things, however this isn't the case in Paddy Power Betfair Graduate Programme. I have the opportunity to work across the whole company with a variety of teams on various different projects."

It was this diversity of opportunity that attracted Trinity graduate Jill Watkins to Paddy Power Betfair’s Graduate Programme.

With 30+ places available the company offers a Graduate Programme tailored to harness the skills and ambitions of the successful applicants.

For grads with their sights firmly fixed on a particular discipline the Paddy Power Betfair Graduate Programme allows people to work within their chosen specialism, with placements in Marketing Science & Insights, Finance or Customer Operations.

For grads yet to commit to a particular business discipline then the Commercial Graduate Programme offers people the opportunity to gain experience with five four-month rotations across key areas of the business including VIP, Commercial International, Business to Business, Insights & Analytics, Paddy Power Commercial, Betfair Commercial, Risk & Trading, Product, Customer Experience, Retail and TVG.

Watkins successfully joined the Paddy Power Betfair Commercial Graduate Programme and is currently working with the Casino Marketing Team.

"We focus on how best to market Paddy Power's Casino various games to our current and potential customers. To do this I work a lot on promotions which are running onsite along with the creation of content to communicate our offerings to customers. This could mean coming up with design briefs, onsite copy or new promotional ideas."

Paddy Power Betfair plc was formed in February this year following the merger of two of the fastest-growing online betting operators in the world; Paddy Power plc and the Betfair Group.

The company, which employs over 7000 people, is a significant player in the betting industry with total revenues of £1.3bn generated from its market-leading presence in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA.

Recruitment is currently underway for Paddy Power Betfair’s September 2017 Graduate Programme with applicants needing to achieve, or be on course to achieve, a 2:1 in their degree. However, it's not just about the grades according to Alanna Burke, the HR professional responsible for graduate recruitment.

"We look for Graduates who makes it their business to know our business, customers, products and industry.”

The positions are predominately based in Dublin with the Marketing Science and Insights programme being based in either Dublin or London. The 95% retention rate speaks volumes about the quality and ethos of the Grad Programme.

"The merger of Paddy Power and Betfair brings more opportunity and scope for new Graduates starting in the business." says Burke.

"Graduates gain real responsibility from day one. We ensure that we provide Graduates with the essential skills in order to build their expertise and excel in the Programme."

Being able to hit the ground running is important says successful graduate Jill Watkins.

"When you start you are very quickly given a lot of responsibility and autonomy to make decisions. This is amazing, especially when you're just starting out but it definitely takes time to get used to. Also, the pace that we move at is so quick because of the industry. This means we are constantly on the move which again takes getting used to."

Of course given that it's Paddy Power Betfair it’s safe to assume that it's not all work, work, work; something that Alanna Burke is happy to confirm.

"Of course we love sports! We love being sociable, so what better way to bring people together than our "Ministry of Fun". From our famous Cheltenham parties, Summer BBQ and Halloween Party, our sports and social programme really does have something for everyone."
