Websites with '.ie' addresses up 17,000

TECHNOLOGY

THE number of websites registered with a ".ie" address increased by more than 17,000 last year as the company that monitors the domain recorded healthy annual profits. The IE Domain Registry (IEDR) increased profits for 2010 by more than half to €691,372, compared with €449,192 a year earlier.

Irish firm in joint $2.3bn contract win

DEALS

A JOINT venture that includes Clonmel-based engineering group Kentz has been awarded a $2.3bn (€1.6bn) contract by Chevron for mechanical, electrical and instrumentation work on the massive Gorgon gas project off Barrow Island in Australia. The contract win is a significant coup for Kentz. Work on the contract will create about 1,650 jobs.

Airport firm suffers losses of €1m

THE company that operates many of the food outlets at Dublin Airport suffered losses of almost €1m last year, but still sent a €7.5m dividend back to its UK parent. Last night a spokesman for the company said the Irish loss was driven in part by costs associated with setting up three stores in the new Terminal 2.

Icon acquires Firecrest Clinical

ACQUISITION

IRISH clinical trials outsourcer Icon has acquired Limerick-based Firecrest Clinical, a provider of technology that boosts investigator site performance and study management. Co-founded in 2001 by chief executive Gary Hughes, Firecrest employs 60 people, all of whom will join Icon.

Turnover in Irish firms down 19.7pc

TRADING

TURNOVER in Irish companies and ETFs on the Irish Stock Exchange fell by 19.7pc in Q2 of this year compared with Q1. A new report from the ISE shows that while the number of trades remained consistent from Q1 to Q2, (554,000 and 552,000 respectively), the value of these trades fell from €10.4bn to €8.3bn. Daily average turnover in equities and ETFs fell by 17.6pc in the same period. Irish companies trading on ISE markets raised €2,463m in Q2, the report shows.
