SACHA Baron Cohen's portrayal of Kazakhstan in the 2006 comedy Borat hasn't dampened the desire of Irish businesses to trade with the central Asian country.

At €2.8m, Ireland spent 30 times more on imports from Kazakhstan in the first six months of this year than it did over the same months in 2010, according to the latest official figures.

Pharmaceuticals make up the bulk of those imports. Irish exports to Kazakhstan have increased by about 25 per cent over the last year.

While most of our exports to the country are chemicals, Kazakhstan is also buying our fish and honey. Ireland is also providing educational services to the country.
