Tourism 'being let down by poor CSO data'

Tourism statistics produced by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) aren't accurate enough to help the sector deploy marketing budgets, a survey of the trade has indicated, writes John Mulligan.

The Irish Hotels Federation – whose conference begins in Killarney, Co Kerry, today – said 61pc of hotels and guesthouses didn't rate CSO data as good enough to provide relevant insights into travel patterns.

President Michael Vaughan said tourism businesses were frustrated by the lack of information. "Without the necessary resources and tools for proper planning, we will continue to lack in-depth insights that would enable us to transform the way we market Ireland."
