Tesco signs off on DVD rental kiosk deal

A BRITISH movie vending firm has inked a deal with Tesco that will see its machines placed in three of the retailer's Irish stores this week on a trial basis.
Movie Booth, which is understood to have previously trialled one of its automated DVD rental kiosks in one Tesco store, is expanding the trial to include one of Tesco's largest stores, at Clare Hall in Dublin, while another outlet in the capital will also have one of the machines installed. The third kiosk will be in Tesco's store in Wexford town.
Movie Booth managing director Carlos Marco Rider said the Cheltenham-based company had been negotiating with Tesco for some time.
He hopes that additional kiosks will be installed in other Tesco stores in coming months.
The movie vending concept has been attempted in a number of guises in Ireland, and has yet to take off here. The idea is more popular on the continent.
Drogheda-based firm Cinematic launched a video vending trail in a number of Spar shops around Dublin back in 2005. It currently has machines in over 30 Spar and Mace shops, mostly in the capital. That company is owned by Malachy Murphy and Barry Lynch.
