Michael Noonan has picked a tax expert to lead the Department of Finance following the surprise resignation of previous secretary general John Moran announced in May.
Mr Noonan will propose assistant secretary Derek Moran at a Cabinet meeting next week, sources said yesterday evening. Mr Moran, who is in his 40s, is seen as a safe pair of hands with a good understanding of the public finances and tax issues. The restoration of the public finances and the defence of the current tax system following harsh criticism overseas are two of the Government’s most important challenges.
A Department of Finace spokesman declined to confirm Mr Moran’s appointment but did confirm that a name will be presented to cabinet next week.
Mr Moran has often explained the national finances at press conferences and is well regarded in the Department of the Taoiseach.
