Supermarket closure to cost 100 jobs
The owners of an independent supermarket that is to close with the loss of 100 jobs today said they are no longer able to compete with multinational retailers.
Una McLoughlin of the Better Deals store in Strabane said the arrival of Asda in the town has hit them hard. She said the ongoing economic difficulties in the Republic of Ireland had also damaged trade.
"Ninety per cent of our business is euro," she said. "People don`t have the money they used to have down south, what with the downturn.
"Asda have also come in and that's hit us badly."
The Better Deals supermarket, which has been trading for 16 years, will close in June. Its 50 employees will be made redundant with the same number of jobs expected to go at the seven independent units in the store`s complex which will also have to close.
