The Republican Congressman is third in order of precedence in the US system, after President Obama and the Vice President. US Ambassador Kevin F O'Malley and six members of Congress attended the lunch at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. In an often amusing speech, Mr Boehner backed a free trade deal between the US and Europe, and supported boosting energy security especially in Central Europe as a guard against Russia, describing President Putin as "the Bolshevik in Moscow."

Mr Boehner entertained the crowd with an impression of Taoiseach Enda Kenny who he said is "a funny guy, a serious guy. Someone I can work with."
