Social justice group urges minimum 6pc tax on firms' profit

Lobby group Social Justice Ireland says no company should pay less than 6pc tax on profits and called for a cap on the effective tax rate for individuals.

The maximum and minimum rates are outlined in a pre-Budget submission from the group – formerly known as the Conference of Religious in Ireland (CORI). The group wants Budget 2014 to include a major public investment programme and an end to cuts in services, but accepts the need to reduce the overall Budget by €3.1bn.

It wants a cap so that the effective income tax rate is not higher than 45pc once income tax, PRSI and the universal social charge are added up.
