A Santander bid for Allied Irish Banks is not out of the question, according to media reports citing Ciaran Callaghan, an analyst at NCB Stockbrokers in Dublin.
Speculation is mounting that Santander may be the lead bidder for AIB’s 40 offices in the UK.
Santander held talks with M&T Bank about combining its US operations with the New York-based lender, the Financial Times reported yesterday.
AIB has said it will sell its 22.5pc holding in M&T to boost its capital base.
