Former biochemistry researcher Fitzgerald set up Randox, which provides blood testing diagnostics for about 20pc of all the laboratories in the world, in a chicken coop at the back of his parents' garden in 1982.

Most recent numbers for the Antrim company show it now has sales of £96m (113m) and pre-tax profits of £18m (21.2m). Fitzgerald paid 7m to buy the historic Dundarave Estate in Bushmills two years ago for corporate hospitality and as the location of a wellness clinic.
