Waterford man Martin Dunphy is now an active backer of start-ups, having made about 71m before debt repayments when he sold his specialist lender Marlin to Cabot Credit.

A former goalkeeper with the Ireland schoolboys, Dunphy won the u-15 European Football Championship in 1982. He recently set up London-based Ascot Capital to invest in start-ups, and has backed US firm Social Toaster. He has also invested in property, and a racehorse.
