Blackrock-educated former ESB chairman Lochlann Quinn (74) helped build Glen Dimplex into the world's largest heating appliance manufacturer before selling his 26pc stake to partner Martin Naughton in 2004. He is thought to have made close to 200m.

He bought the Chateau de Fieuzal vineyard in Bordeaux in 2001 for 38m and is also a shareholder in the five-star Merrion Hotel, which houses Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud. Quinn, who drives a Ferrari, has made other investments with Naughton and bought a number of office blocks in the IFSC, selling them for a 40m profit.

A former chairman of AIB, Quinn is a philanthropist, giving large sums to UCD for its business school, which is named after him. He also bought a 17th-century painting from the Beit collection for 2m to prevent it leaving Ireland, later gifting it to the State.
