Hedge fund boss Harvey McGrath made his millions from trading in the City of London and blue-chip boardroom posts. He owned shares worth 140m in Man Group when he retired, but said he intended to give most of his money away. McGrath owns a £12m mansion in west London, where he counts Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robbie Williams as neighbours.

In addition to chairing Big Society Capital, McGrath is among the angel investors who have raised £6.5m to support the launch of a new online discretionary wealth manager targeting professionals.
