The sparkle has come off Paul Coulson's glass bottle and tin can maker Ardagh over the last year as investors got scared over highly leveraged companies.

Paris-based financier Coulson (63) turned Ardagh from a tiny company listed on the Irish stock market to one of the world's biggest industrial companies through a series of audacious and debt-fuelled buyouts.

Ardagh had planned to float its €2.4bn Oressa metals division last year, but the stock markets cratered at the wrong time. The rest of the glass bottle business is performing well, but there is €4.7bn in debt.

Dubliner Coulson, a trustee of Fine Gael, owns a sumptuous pad on Shrewsbury Road as well as a valuable 18th century townhouse in Paris. There's also talk of a superyacht.
