Belfast-born McCabe turned Irish e-learning group CBT systems into a Nasdaq giant in the 1990s and made a fortune in the process. He sold about €65m worth of shares before CBT was bought out. McCabe then moved into property, with his LNC buying up assets in Bremen and Scotland.

Another scheme saw him buy up luxury homes in Cannes and the Alps to rent to Ireland's new super-rich as part of an exclusive members only club. McCabe's Oyster Investments is a smart backer of the Irish tech sector, taking stakes in the likes of Fieldaware, Datahug and Fleetmatics. He also invested heavily in breast implant group GE Aesthetics, which pulled a Nasdaq flotation last year at very short notice. McCabe owns what had been described as the "finest" house in Foxrock.
