Retiring civil servants' gift list costs us thousands

Carriage clocks for everyone? Pampered civil servants were given "retirement" presents and awards paid for by taxpayers, it has emerged.

Fifteen staff at the Dept of Foreign Affairs shared €7,500 last year, or an average of €500 each. This practice has since been "discontinued".

The taxpayer also picked up the tab for €2,200 in "retirement gifts" at the Valuation Office last year, according to the latest Comptroller & Auditor General report into public spending.

More than €3.6bn is to be cut from the country's deficit in the December Budget, with government spending under massive scrutiny.
