FIFTEEN of Ireland's leading retailers will today unveil plans to recruit 1,000 full-time staff over the next 12 months.
The hiring spree will be announced by industry group Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) as part of a new campaign dubbed 'Back to Work in Retail' which comes after more than a year of brutal job losses.
The initiative will also see REI offer intensive training courses to help match applicants to vacancies across the 15 companies as well as its wider pool of 580 retailers.
"It's great to be doing something positive," said REI chief executive David Fitzsimons, who has enlisted Superquinn founder Fergal Quinn as the 'public face' of the initiative.
The first phase of the plan will see REI invite applications for 150 places on an initial wave of training courses in Dublin, Limerick and Cork, a model that will be rolled out "nationwide" if it proves a success.
"We've asked the HR managers of the 15 companies to come to the courses as well so they can see the candidates and profile their companies," said Mr Fitzsimons.
"There's no guarantees, but we'll do what we can do fix people up with jobs and we'll ask their permission to send their details to all our REI members to see if they'd fit anything else."
The 15 companies taking part include Applegreen, Curry's, Homes Store + More, Paddy Power, Superquinn, The Carphone Warehouse and Topaz.
Mr Fitzsimons said he was "confident" they would cumulatively be hiring at least 1,000.
The initiative is being supported, on a pro bono basis, by agencies CPL Retail and Excel Recruitment. Independent Newspapers is providing free advertising.
