Retail sales remain steady in May

THE volume of retail sales increased by 0.1pc in May compared with April and there was a decrease of 0.7pc annually.

If car sales are excluded, the volume of sales increased by 1.4pc in May versus April and there was no change in the annual figure.

The areas that recorded the largest month-on-month increases were hardware/paints, food and beverages clothing.

One of the biggest drops was car sales which was down 5.5pc.
