Consumers continued to shy away from the shops in April with retail sales down just under 4pc compared with the same period last year.
Excluding car sales, the drop was 5pc annually or 1pc compared with the previous month, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.
The biggest falls were recorded in the fuel, furniture and pharmaceutical sectors.
But there were moderate gains in the sale of clothing and footwear – overall three categories showed growth while ten showed a contraction.
The value of goods sold was also hit during April, down 3.5pc compared to a year earlier and 0.7pc month-on-month.
