Redundancies on the cards for 20pc of firms

A FIFTH of companies said they are likely to make people redundant in the next year, according to a new survey.
And competition for jobs is heating up as more than half of employers have said there has been a huge increase in the amount of CVs being sent to them in the first six months of the year.
The current climate will make it especially difficult for new graduates to find jobs, according to recruitment agency urHired and market research company Focus One.
Speaking at the launch of the new recruitment website, urHired director Henry Fleming said it appears much tougher for job seekers at present.
"Over the last few years people were picking and choosing companies to send their CVs to," he said.
"Now we have the situation where job-seekers are feeling the squeeze and are facing much stiffer competition for vacancies.
"We are expecting a 60pc downturn in the amount of graduates recruited in the milk-round (banking and professional services firms)."
urHired surveyed 100 companies ranging from multinationals to small indigenous industries, to ask about the current state of the Irish jobs market.
Mr Fleming warned that those already in a job would be wise to stay put for the time being.
