Popular Spice Burger saved as Walsh firm is taken over

FAST Food connoisseurs around the country can rejoice -- the spice burger has been saved.

Keystone Foods yesterday said it had acquired Walsh Family Foods, the Dublin-based firm known for a variety of foods but in particular the spice burger.

In a statement, Keystone said the deal was designed to "increase its product portfolio and processing capacity in Europe".

Walsh Foods, which employs 21 staff, has been in trouble for some time and was put into receivership in 2009.

KPMG's Kieran Wallace, who was appointed as receiver three years ago, said the announcement was an "exciting development" for the company.

The spice burger is one of the most popular foods in the country and has been made by Walsh Foods since the 1950s. Its ingredients are reputedly a closely guarded secret.

The burger was also the subject of a court case in 2009 when Walsh Family Foods sought an injunction to stop a former director and owner of the company from making the burger.
