Pensions relief decision welcomed

THE Government's decision not to reduce high earners' pension tax relief to 20pc was last night welcomed by Irish Life retail boss Gerry Hassett, but he stressed the industry still needed "greater clarity" on future pension policy.
A document published on Friday showed high earners would get tax relief of 33pc on pension contributions, more than the 20pc mooted by the last Government.
"We're disappointed tax relief wasn't kept at the old 41pc, but these days any kind of tax relief is valuable," said Mr Hassett.
But he added that the industry would "welcome" clarity on broader issues, such as whether the up-coming jobs budget would feature a pensions levy.
