Own-brand range helps boosts Centra sales to €1.5bn

Retail chain Centra notched up sales of €1.48bn last year, a 3.5pc rise on 2012.

The symbol group, which is run by independent retailers and controlled by the Cork-based Musgrave group, said that sales of its own-brand range rose 17pc during the year.

The chain also achieved record sales during last summer as the country enjoyed a rare heatwave, and also over the Christmas period.

Martin Kelleher, the managing director of Centra, said 2013 had proved successful for the chain despite the continuing tough economic climate. He said the own-brand range was instrumental in driving the sales increases.

That own-brand range includes about 800 products and involved an €8m investment by Centra. Another 120 products are due to be added to the range this year.

Centra also says it expects to add 20 new stores to its network in 2014. That's the same number that it said it would add in 2013. It includes greenfield outlets as well as existing convenience stores that will join the Centra network.

There are 465 Centra stores that between them employ nearly 10,000 people. The chain spent €1bn buying goods from Irish producers last year, including €130m of Irish food.

Mr Kelleher was speaking yesterday in Killarney, Co Kerry, where Centra was holding its national retailer conference.

Musgrave also controls the SuperValu, Superquinn and Daybreak brands here. Next week, it will formally rebrand Super-quinn under the SuperValu name.
