Opportunities 'as likely in Beijing as in Berlin'

IRISH graduates of the future are as likely to be working in Beijing as Berlin, Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney predicted yesterday.

Speaking at the end of a week-long trade mission to China, Mr Coveney (pictured) said Ireland was well placed to take advantage of the huge potential the Asian superpower offered.

He said the visit had shown that Ireland was not interested in what he described as a "smash and grab" operation but was willing to build up trading relationships with Chinese companies.

Although some people had questioned the wisdom of bringing such a large trade mission to the Far East, he said Ireland was "on the correct path" in seeking to be proactive in developing trade relations with China.

He described the opportunities for business and trade in the Far East as "limitless" and said the problem for Irish companies would be in delivering on the volumes required.

Mr Coveney said the trade mission had identified potential opportunities across a range of sectors, including beef, pork, poultry, hides, agri-services and seafood.
