TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has announced the numbers on the dole are down this month.

Mr Kenny said the unemployment rate at the end of November is 14.6pc with 432,000 now unemployed.

He said this was 2,895 down on October and 12,000 lower than this time last year.

Seasonally adjusted, Mr Kenny said the level of unemployment was down 1,500.

“It’s beginning to head in the right direction and we need to build on that with the Budget today."

The new figures show there has been a much bigger drop in the number of men on the dole than women.

But the numbers out of work long term increased by 3.7pc, with 45pc now signing on for over a year.

The number of young people aged under 25 signing on fell by 11pc in the last year, but this is believed to be mainly down to emigration and people continuing in education.

Apart from those on the Live Register, some 81,620 are now taking part in various Government back to work and education programmes for the unemployed.
