Number of people employed at highest level since 2009 - CSO

THE number of people employed in the State has reached the highest level since 2009 at 1.9m, new figures show.

There were 31,600 more people employed to the second quarter of 2014 over the previous year, an increase of 1.7pc, according to the Quarterly National Household Survey results, released yesterday morning.

At the same time unemployment decreased by 46,200 or 15.4pc in the year to the second quarter, bringing the total number of unemployed to 254,500.

The figures represent the eight quarter in a row in which unemployment has dropped on an annual basis.

The number of long-term unemployed also decreased from 8.1pc to 6.8pc over the year to the second quarter of the year.

The total number of people in the labour force in the second quarter of 2014 was 2.1m, representing a decrease of 14,500 over the year.
