No sinister reason behind resignation, insists Cowen

FORMER Taoiseach Brian Cowen was renowned for his devotion to politics and Fianna Fail, and it appears that it runs in the family.

The Punt has learned that his brother Barry (pictured), who was elected to the Dail for the Laois/Offaly constituency in the 2011 General Election, has resigned as a joint director of an auctioneering business.

Mr (Barry) Cowen was somewhat reticent when contacted by this newspaper for a comment, other than to say that he wanted to devote more time to his parliamentary activities.

"There's no sinister reason (for the resignation)," he said. "I've resigned my position and I've been elected to the Dail and I want to devote more time to that," said Mr Cowen.

However, it's not entirely clear if he will have a shareholding in Cowen Kelly Stephenson Limited, based in Portarlington, Co Laois, of which he had been a director since 2005.

"Let's put it this way: if it owes a few pound, I owe a few pound," he said cryptically.
