Ireland's fourth-largest mobile operator has replaced its overall Irish boss. Tesco Mobile has appointed Tadhg Dolly as general manager following the departure of Elaine Russell, who led the company for the last three years. Dolly was formerly the company's e-commerce manager in Ireland.

Tesco Mobile is jointly owned by Tesco and Three, and has over 300,000 customers.

Its sister network in the UK, which has five million customers, was to be sold as part of Three's €13bn bid to buy O2 UK from Telefonica. However, the European Commission blocked the proposed takeover last week, citing threats to consumer competition and network investment.

O2 UK's Irish-born chief executive Ronan Dunne, who was to step down from his role in the event of a successful takeover by Three, said that there are now no plans for O2 UK to sell on Tesco Mobile.

"We've been thrilled at how the MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) has been managed in the last 18 months," Dunne told industry publication Mobile News. "There are no circumstances in the absence of this transaction that there will be any agreement between Tesco and ourselves."

Hutchison is now awaiting a ruling on the €22bn merger of its 3 Italia with Vimpelcom's Wind.
