Merck Sharp & Dohme lays off 40 staff

PHARMACEUTICAL firm Merck Sharp & Dohme has announced 40 voluntary redundancies at its Rathdrum, Co Wicklow division.

It will reduce its headcount at the plant to 280 as part of a restructuring process but the company is continuing to invest in Ireland.

Just last month the firm opened a new research and development centre in Ballydine, Co Tipperary.

This involved an investment of €100m and the creation of 70 jobs with the potential to increase this number to 120 as part of further expansion plans at the division.

Currrently six innovative medicines are in development at the centre, including new therapies for high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C.
