Medical device maker Medtronic is to locate a new high-tech manufacturing facility in Galway.

The company said 100 staff would be located there, and that staff would manufacture the company's drug-coated balloon which is used to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD).

PAD is a build up of plaque in the arteries leading to reduced blood flow and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, which the balloon treats by opening up the arteries.

"The decision to locate the new manufacturing facility in Galway is based on the existing high-tech capability and expertise at the site in drug-device combination products for Medtronic’s coronary business," Medtronic said.

"Highly skilled professionals from other parts of the Medtronic organization, approximately 100, who specialise in the areas of quality and manufacturing engineering, supply chain and production management, will be stationed in the new facility."
