Medieval inspiration behind new coin
THE Central Bank has launched a limited edition €20 collector coin to celebrate medieval Irish architecture.
The gold coin, designed by Irish artist Mary Gregoriy, goes on sale today for €48 each. Only 10,000 will be issued.
The coin features elements typical of Irish medieval architecture, including a round tower, a Celtic cross and a gothic rose window.
"The combination of these elements, inspired by the Rock of Cashel, provides a clear example of the indigenous and European styles and influences prominent during Ireland's medieval period," said Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan.
The Central Bank launches four or five new products each year.
