Knock Airport is aiming to secure new transatlantic services by 2016 as part of its new 10-year strategy.

Executives including managing director Joe Gilmore have submitted a report on the future of regional airports to Government.

It's understood Knock will seek investment of between €40m and €50m up to 2023.

The Government is currently formalising a draft national aviation policy and is expected to release that draft early in 2014. It will then go back to stakeholders for further input before a final policy is issued.

Mr Gilmore said: "The process has confirmed and succeeded in convincing the Department of Transport that regional airports have an important role to play and that Knock has a critical role to play as an economic engine for the region."
