A Smurfit Kappa employee kidnapped in Colombia by FARC guerrillas was freed last week following a dramatic rescue operation conducted by Colombian Special Forces.
However, another member of the Smurfit Kappa group is still being held by the guerrillas. Smurfit declined to comment on the developments when contacted by the Sunday Independent last Friday.
Gary McGann's €2bn-valued Smurfit has major projects in Colombia ranging from forestry to cardboard box making. The Irish packaging firm has suffered from political instability in South America. Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez seized Smurfit assets in a campaign to nationalise farms and factories owned by foreign companies.
