Former Ireland football star David O'Leary, who scored that penalty in the Italia 1990 World Cup, and Live Aid legend Bob Geldof have emerged as backers of some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, including the €90m crusade epic Kingdom of Heaven and I Love You, Beth Cooper.

O'Leary is a partner in Inside Track 3 LLP, which helped finance Kingdom of Heaven starring Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson. The 2005 movie had a disappointing US box office take, netting just $47m but it raked in a further $164m overseas. O'Leary's fellow investors in the movie included former Ireland football stars Denis Irwin and Clinton Morrison, with ex-Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill and Wayne Rooney also backers.

Geldof has emerged as a backer of the Ingenious Film Partnership, which helped finance a massive slate of movies including The A-Team, X-Men and romcom I Love You, Beth Cooper.

Earlier this month, the Sunday Independent revealed that Irish footballers Robbie Keane, John O'Shea and Kevin Kilbane had helped finance Avatar -- the biggest grossing movie of all time.
