Irish debt total at €1.64 trillion, new figures

The total amount owed by government, the Central Bank, financial institutions, companies and households is €1.64 trillion, the Central Statistics Office said today.
“The gross external debt of all resident sectors (ie general government, the monetary authority, financial and non-financial corporations and households) amounted to €1,638.0bn,” the CSO added.
The figure for the end of June was €37.9bn less than it was at the end of March.
Government foreign borrowing decreased by €1.2bn to €129.7bn at end-June 2013 after the State repaid a bond.
Banks owed €277.3bn at end of June while companies owed €877.7bn or 54pc of the total debt at end-June 2013.
