Irish shoppers will spend less on Christmas this year, according to a new survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions.

The average shopper expects to spend €563, down from €600 last year.

Almost half of those surveyed (45pc) said they would have to borrow to manage the costs, but that was down from 51pc last year. The ILCU estimated that the average sum borrowed would be €388.

Just shy of 80pc said they think people spend too much on Christmas, up from 71pc last year.

Over two thirds of respondents said they would shop online for gifts.
