Inflation up by 2.6pc in the year to September

CONSUMER prices increased by 0.3pc in September putting the annual rate of inflation at 2.6pc, compared with 2.2pc in August.
The biggest price increases were in sectors like household utilities like gas and fuel, up 8.9pc, transport and health which hiked 4.2pc and 3.4pc respectively.
Clothing and footwear increased due to a further recovery in prices following the traditional summer sales while housing costs were up due to higher mortgage interest payments.
There were drops in prices of furnishings, household equipment and education.
The EU harmonised rate of inflation was 1.3pc in September, compared with the same period last year.
