Independent.ie makes two key appointments to biggest news site in Ireland

TWO senior appointments have been announced at the Irish Independent's online operation, Independent.ie, the biggest news website on the island.

Fionnuala O'Leary has become executive editor (online) to direct content development and lead the team of dynamic young journalists on the recently relaunched site.

Ronan Price becomes chief innovation officer on Independent.ie, responsible for all aspects of social media, communities and online support.

Editor Stephen Rae said the appointments reflected the Irish Independent's commitment to continuing the extraordinarily strong growth on the site.

"We are leading the way in terms of online strategy and evolving on a continuous basis. The new appointments will help drive growth further and win even more audience," he said. "We are directing more resources into ensuring our platforms in online and print are delivering to all our audiences on a constant basis.

"Fionnuala is one of the most experienced news executives on these islands. Her experience of running a demanding news operation will be invaluable in driving content generation on Independent.ie and ensuring we lead the way in breaking news, video and trusted journalism.

"Ronan will ensure we are in constant touch with our audience and oversee all aspects of social media."

Fionnuala was previously news editor with the 'Evening Herald' and has worked as a features writer and columnist on other titles.

A married mother of two, she holds an honours degree in English and Sociology from UCD and a first class honours masters in Scriptwriting.

New Chief Innovation Officer Ronan Price is a journalist with more than 20 years' experience working in newspapers in Ireland and Australia.

A graduate of Rathmines College of Journalism, he was formerly assistant editor with the Irish Independent print edition as well as occupying key news roles in 'Herald AM', the 'Evening Herald' and 'Irish Daily Star'.

He also writes about technology for the Irish Independent in print and online.
