'Independent' scoops journalism honours at Smurfit awards
INDEPENDENT News & Media's position as the home of important business news stories was cemented last week at the UCD Michael Smurfit Business Journalism Awards, sponsored by Eircom Wholesale.
INM special correspondent Paul Williams took the Breaking Business News award for the Anglo Tapes expose.
"It was the scoop of the year," said the judges of the story that exposed damning phone calls made by senior Anglo Irish Bank executives, calling it "the story with everything, and an impact far beyond business, into law and politics".
Sunday Independent and 'Irish Independent' columnist Richard Curran, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award, a recognition given to a journalist who has enhanced the public's understanding of business.
Richard Curran, along with former Sunday Independent journalist Tom Lyons, also took home the award for Specialist Business Reporting for their RTE television programme Inside Irish Nationwide.
Reporter John Mulligan was also one of three people who were nominated in the Breaking News category – an award which eventually went to 'Independent' colleague Paul Williams.
