IBM move to cost 200 jobs here
GLOBAL computer giant IBM is to axe 200 jobs after announcing plans to move part of its business to Singapore, writes Anne-Marie Walsh.
The affected workers will be offered voluntary redundancies but there will also be opportunities for them to transfer elsewhere in the company.
IBM has begun consulting with staff to achieve the redundancies at its Technology Campus in Mulhuddart, in Dublin.
An IBM spokesman said the job losses were the result of an announcement last year that it planned to move its high-end server manufacturing operation to Asia. He said some of the workers at the server manufacturing operation that supplied Europe, Asia and Africa may apply for new jobs being created in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
The company has a workforce of over 3,000 in the Republic, and is hiring 200 workers in software and sales after announcing last month that it will open a Smarter Cities Technology Centre in Damastown in Dublin. A further 100 jobs will be created through the expansion of software laboratories in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
Fine Gael spokesman on Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar, urged the company to avoid compulsory redundancies.
